Canfield Family of Orange County, New York

Farmer, Husband and Father William Canfield

Visiting cemeteries can offer some helpful information, learn more about your family, your community, and even history. Some genealogists, like myself, include cemeteries in my research. On a recent road trip, Union Cemetery in Slate Hill, Orange County, New York caught my attention. There are many tombstones to view, both new and old that hold information. One of those belonged to William Canfield who lived most of his life in Orange County, New York. He was the son of Jesse Canfield and Mary Wood, both of New York, they are also buried in the same cemetery. He was born approximately 1803, using the calculations on census records. In viewing his page on Find A Grave it states he was born on the 30th of September in 1802. One of his brothers, Jesse, passed away before him and is also buried in the same cemetery.

William married Sarah A. Lee, of Orange County, together they had four children. They had two sons, Charles S. and Jesse W., and two daughters, Mary L. and Emmaline Evans. In viewing the census records it appears that his occupation was always listed as a farmer. In driving through that area, I can see why there are still plenty of farms throughout this section of the county and it is full of history. The drive on those long winding roads was breathtaking in some places not only because of the landscape but the history in the homes, barns, and churches.
