Giveaways are so much fun on both ends, those receiving and those giving things away. I’m so happy to have this opportunity to do something like this. Starting December 1st through the 12th at 6:30 pm EST live on my channel. There are so many wonderful products and companies that I will be sharing with all of you through this 12-day event. For the past three days, I’ve been dropping hints about the different companies and products I will be showcasing. With today being the day before it all kicks off I thought I would share again. There are a few ways you can register, I don’t want any of you to miss out on the opportunities that I will be sharing with you. I know some of you don’t have access to YouTube and my channel ARodesky Genealogy. So, with that being said you will find a link on all my social media sites for a chance to enter. Each day you will see a new registration form for that giveaway, you can register for each giveaway if you wish. Like I said I don’t want any of you to miss out on the opportunity.
As most of us know, thousands of identified family antiques and artifacts exist in the hands of antique dealers and collectors around the world. How sad to hold an identified 1880’s cabinet card photo offered at an antique store for only $5.00 to a collector, when somebody, somewhere would consider it priceless!
Antique dealers, also, who are generally not genealogists, often mourn the impossible odds of finding the family who would recognize a magnificent “Orphaned Heirloom” as a part of their own family’s past.
JustaJoy.com Family Heirloom Exchange
JustaJoy.com Family Heirloom Exchange is a subscription website that was developed to solve this problem. Born in the antique world, JustaJoy actively solicits listings of identified items from quality antique dealers from across the United States and in other countries. Heraldic English silver? No problem. Original minutemen signed document? We got it. Wanted posters – Of course!
The site has successfully matched family Bibles, photos, documents, Civil War letters, yearbooks, and other artifacts of all kinds, yet thousands still await discovery. Everything from baby books to dog tags is listed and each is indexed by the associated surname or surname making searches easy and fun.
Items can also be searched and sub-searched by place, date, war, school, or any other criteria. JustaJoy is designed to provide correct search results, even for surnames such as White, Bell, House, etc. – names that render other “for sell” or auction sites difficult to navigate when looking for family artifacts.
24 Hour Alerts
JustaJoy.com members are notified by emails called “Joy Alerts” as items are posted associated with one or more surnames from a member’s pre-listed surname group (up to twenty). These alerts are important because of the individuality of each item posted – there is usually only one Bible or one Civil War sword, for instance. It is also likely that JustaJoy.com is not the only outlet the antique dealer is using to sell his or her item, also creating urgency.
Fortunately, the site does not delete information or photos of sold items. Members can always print photos and learn information a sold artifact reveals. On occasion, the new owner will also leave contact information and offer scans, etc. of the original item.
JustaJoy Angels
We, at JustaJoy.com, have learned that, like antique dealers, genealogists cannot throw anything away (smile), so all members are invited to post, as well. It is free for members to list and sell items, though JustaJoy bylaws prohibit prices that exceed the item’s true market value in the antique world. Genealogist to genealogist matches happen regularly and bring happiness to everyone involved.
“The Heritage Room”
JustaJoy also provides an informative monthly newsletter, “The Heritage Room” with features on the history, acquisition, and care of collectibles, celebrity dealers, special offers, and much more. “The Heritage Room” enjoys a strong following and helps to create a dialog between the site and its members, who often offer great stories of their own, along with suggestions for the website.
“But I have everything from my family!”
We want to congratulate you if you have become the caretaker of your family’s tangible heritage. It is an awesome responsibility and we appreciate that you have stepped up to the plate. But, we can tell you from experience, that you probably don’t have “everything” from your family. JustaJoy has matched WWII regimental photos that were likely never in the family, to begin with, shaving mugs, golf trophies, etched cranberry glass from the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933, newspapers, etiquette cards, pension applications, and many other ordinarily mundane articles that are now considered quite precious.
JustaJoy.com and Genealogical Societies
JustaJoy offers free memberships to genealogical libraries and many societies use JustaJoy as a fundraiser by posting and selling donated items. This is done at no cost to the Society except acquainting their members with the JustaJoy.com Family Heirloom Exchange.
Your Facts, Our Artifacts
JustaJoy.com makes hunting for “orphaned heirlooms” possible and a lot of fun with a treasure chest of goodies that grows daily. What better reward could there be for all that hard work than by finding and recognizing an item that actually belonged to an ancestor – a reward that could last for many generations yet to come.

Energy is the first word that comes to mind when I first saw Riley. A couple of weeks ago I shared my excitement over Riley and his YouTube channel Relative Surprises. How many times have we heard this in a conversation, “today’s youth just don’t care about our family history”? I first found out about Riley when he posted a tweet about one of my first videos last month.
Since then we have gone back and forth with tweets and a couple emails. We’re still working on doing an interview, so excited about that and can wait to share it with all of you. But in the meantime, if you have a chance click on the link above and visit Riley, trust me it’s worth it.
When it comes to a community there are many sizes and ages within our communities. The Maple Hurst Camp isn’t any different as you can see in thepast photosand these below. I wish there were names on the back of these photographs or some notes along the sides. With the photographs that were posted, we are able to get a better idea of the time frame.
When viewing some of these photographs here I think about tomorrow's holiday, Thanksgiving. I can’t help but wonder what their Thanksgiving was like and Christmas if they celebrated Christmas. What's funny is after purchasing this lot on eBay and going through some of them I thought of the Walton’s and Walton Mountain.
With only one photograph having the information we can tell Chief was someone of possible importance. The notation on the side of Chief’s photograph shows they were in the camp in November of 1917. If you’ve been following the photos that I’ve been sharing ofMaple Hurst Camp. You might notice one or even two of the men who appear in these photographs from the previous ones. I still don’t have much information on the camp, have any of you heard of the Maple Hurst Camp?
Okay some of us have had our DNA tested in hopes to find out more about our ancestors. There seems to be one word that keeps turning up with a big question mark, haplogroup. So, here’s the official dictionary definition; a set of similar haplotypes inherited together, or a group who share a set of similar haplotypes, used to understand genetic lineages. Yeah, I know I can see the expressions on your faces even from here.
A quick definition that might help you to better understand it, without all of the scientific and technical terms. Think of it like this, the haplogroup is the general region and origin of your maternal ancestors. You might find it easier viewing the term as a large group, a family group like Native Americans a Viking clan. It tells us where our ancestors came from long ago way back in time. I hope this helps some I know there are some more websites you can visit. To get some additional information on the term, how it plays in your DNA results try visiting the following sites.
Well, now the time has come to introduce you to Essie Mae Stewart, my great-grandmother on my maternal side. She was born on the 2nd of November in 1880 in Daviess County, Indiana. Her parents, my 2x great grandparents were William Calvin Stewart and Dicey Lavina Bugher who were both from Indiana. She was one of six children, four of whom are half-siblings.
She marriedEdward Clinton in 1897 in Daviess County, Indiana on the 8th of August. I never had the pleasure of meeting my great-grandmother but I’m thankful for the stories my mom shares. Great-grandma Clinton was a lady and woman all in one, she could be a lady when needed but a woman, you wouldn’t want to cross. She believed in chores and everyone had them including her and her grandchildren. They lived on a farm in Indiana and raised seven children of their own, three daughters and four sons.
