Tombstone Tuesday - The Money Family

Last week on “Tombstone Tuesday” I decided to try something a little different and it seems to have had a positive result. So again for this week I will not only include some of the photographs that I took while at Old Saint Anne’s Church Cemetery but also some additional information about the Money family.

[1]James A Money went to apply for the marriage license for himself and Cora F. Reynolds on the 11th of October 1894. The license was applied for in the state of Delaware for the sum of two hundred dollars.



[2]1900 United States Federal Census shows that James was born in April 1865 in Delaware and his father Delaware, his mother was born in Delaware. At the time of the census James was 35 years of age. Cora was born in November 1874 in Delaware and her father Delaware, her mother was born in Delaware. At the time of the census Cora was 25 years of age. The census record also shows that James and Cora were married for 6 years at this time.  It also shows three additional family members along with a boarder. Ethel M is their daughter born in Delaware on November 1894. At the time of the census Ethel was 5 years of age. Leland W is one of their sons born in Delaware on January 1898. At the time of the census Leland was 2 years of age. Their other son listed on this census was James B. born in Delaware on December 1899. At the time of this census he was 5 months of age.  The boarder listed on the census is Curtis Gibbs born in Delaware about 1879. He is listed as a single black male and was 21 years of age during the time of this census taking. Both of his parents were also born in Delaware.


[3]1910 United States Federal Census still shows that James was born about 1865 in Delaware, his father Delaware, his mother Delaware.  At the time of the census James was 45 years of age. Cora is still shown as being born about 1875 in Delaware, her father Delaware, her mother Delaware. At the time of the census Cora was 35 years of age. Ethel and both Leland and James continue to appear on this census. They also have and additional five more children who appear on this census record. Ethel M is listed as single and 15 years of age during this census taking. Leland W is listed as single and 12 years of age during this census taking. James B is listed as single and 10 years of age during this census taking.  William R is listed as their son who is 9 years of age. Hilda V is listed as their daughter who is 7 years of age. Walter H is listed as their son who is 5 years of age. Carlton is listed as their son who is 3 years of age. Reynolds is listed as their son who is 1 year and 11 months of age. Anna M is listed as their daughter who is 1 month old. There are two hired hands listed on this census. Douglass Turner age 29, born about 1881 is listed as a black man, born in Delaware and both of his parents were born in Maryland.  Leroy Draper age 19, born about 1891 is listed as a black man, born in Delaware, parents born in Maryland.

**Special note Curtis Gibbs is no longer listed on the census.


[4]1920 United States Federal Census shows James is now 54 years of age and Cora age 45. James occupation is listed as a farmer and rents his family home.  Leland W is listed as single son and 21 years of age. James B is listed as single son and 20 years of age. William R is listed as single son and 19 years of age. Hilda V is listed as single daughter and 16 years of age. W. Harman is listed as single son and 14 years of age. Carleton is listed as a single son and 12 years of age.  Reynolds is listed as a single son and 11 years of age. Anna M is listed as a single daughter and 9 years of age. A new addition to the family is Mary E their daughter is listed as 7 months of age. One black male servant is listed, Charlie E Rouse age 19, born about 1901 and single. 

**Special note - Daughter Ethel M is no longer listed on the census.
                           Hired hand Douglas Turner and Leroy Praper are no longer listed on the census.


[5]1930 United States Federal Census shows James is now 65 years of age and Cora age 55. James B is listed as a single son age 30 with date of birth about 1900 and born in Delaware. W. Harman is listed as single son age 25 with a date of birth about 1905 and born in Delaware. Carlton is listed as a single son age 23 with a date of birth about 1907 and born in Delaware. Reynold is listed as a single son age 21 with a date of birth about 1909 and born in Delaware. Anna N is listed as single daughter age 20 with a date of birth about 1910 and born in Delaware. Mary E is listed as a single daughter age 11 with a date of birth about 1919 and born in Delaware. One lodger is listed on this census; Fredrick Byar born about 1898 in New York, his age at the time of the census is 32. Both of his parents were born in New York.  

** Special note – Sons Leland W. and William R. are no longer listed on the census.
                             Daughter Hilda V. is no longer listed on the census.
                             Male servant, Charlie E Rouse is no longer listed on the census.     


[6]1940 United States Federal Census shows James A at 75 years of age, his occupation as a framer, renting the family home and his highest level of education at 8th grade. Cora F is 65 years of age with her highest level of education at 8th grade. James B is listed as a single son age 40, highest level of education at 7th grade; his occupation is listed as an unpaid farmer on the family farm. Mary E is listed as a single daughter age 21 and completed high school. Fred Beyer is still listed as hired help, age 45 with a date of birth about 1895, single and born in New York, he completed one level of high school. This census record now shows an additional hired hand along with a cook. Rachel Butcher is listed as a cook, private family, born about 1903 age 37; she is listed as Chinese and born in Delaware. Osborne Butcher age 16 born about 1924 he is also listed as Chinese and born in Delaware, with his highest level of education at 7th grade.   

** Special note – Sons W. Harman, Carlton and Reynolds are no longer listed on the census.   
                             Daughter Anna N. is no longer listed on the census.


While searching on Findagrave.com I was able to collect some additional information on both James and Cora. In addition to the photographs of their tombstones their death certificates were also shared.

James A Money was born 4 APR 1865 in Townsend Town, his father was Benjamin Money born   in Delaware and his mother was Sarah Townsend also born in Delaware. His date of death is 23 JUN 1941. (Memorial #15027587)  

Cora Florence Reynolds was born 12 NOV 1874 in Middletown, Delaware and her father was William Reynolds and her mother was Hannah Moffett. Her date of death is 24 OCT 1949. (Memorial #15027577)
